Crystal Bridges has opened its first new permanent gallery as part of a major expansion that will double the museum’s footprint by next year.

The new Foundations of American Art gallery is located in one of the museum’s original spaces, formerly home to the Contemporary gallery. The change is part of a broader reshuffling — nearly all of the museum’s collections will be relocated as the expansion progresses (updates here).

The gallery features works from the 18th to early 20th centuries. It opened to the public Saturday, July 19, and includes familiar pieces like Norman Rockwell’s “Rosie the Riveter” (1943) alongside many new acquisitions.

The expansion will add 114,000 square feet of new galleries, studios, dining options, and event spaces.
