Local officials have issued a warning to citizens to stay vigilant against scammers during the storm recovery period.
“We’ve seen so many positive things and people helping out each other and responding,” Joshua Robinson, prosecuting attorney for Benton County, said. “But I also want to let everybody know that we’ve heard some people that are out there taking advantage, that are victimizing people who are most vulnerable right now.”
Robinson emphasized that scammers will face prosecution and be held accountable for their actions.
Tips:
Don’t pay cash upfront for services. Benton County Sheriff Shawn Holloway said one of the most common scams after a disaster is citizens paying for services and never receiving them.
Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations.
Investigate contractors using the Better Business Bureau and the Arkansas Contractor Licensing Board’s website.
Look for online reviews before hiring a contractor.
If you believe you are being or have been scammed, contact law enforcement.
