A single-engine plane crashed near Bentonville Municipal Airport Thursday afternoon just before 3:30 p.m.

Bentonville resident Miranda Ritter was driving south down I Street when she saw the plane crash in an empty field southwest of the intersection of I Street and 14th Street. She said the plane flew over I Street and then went sideways, with its wings facing up and down.

“Then all of a sudden he corrected it, and then, boom, it crashed on the ground, and one of the wings fell off,” she said.

Ritter said she saw a man hop out of the plane immediately after it hit the ground. The cockpit did not look damaged, she said.

5News reported that Benton County Emergency Manager Robert McGowan confirmed the plane’s two occupants were left with minor injuries.
