Crystal Bridges is adding a dose of whimsy to its trail system with a new “playscape” where visitors will be encouraged to climb, swing, and explore — not just stroll.

The Ozark Discovery Canopy will be built along a portion of the trail system near the museum’s North Forest, not far from the museum’s parking garage. It’s expected to open sometime in 2026.

Mockups show landscaped trails with access down into a ravine. Along the paths are features such as a flowing creek, a rotating boulder, oversized swings, and a slide built into the hillside.

It’s designed for both adults and children, according to museum leaders.

“The idea of the playscape began with a simple question: how can you create a space where people of all ages can engage with nature in a playful, meaningful way?” said Rod Bigelow, executive director of Crystal Bridges, at a groundbreaking ceremony on October 9.

Olivia Walton, chairperson of Crystal Bridges, said she was excited for children — including those in her own family — to be able to explore the new space.

“It’s not just a playground, but a space that invites curiosity, creativity, and connection,” Walton said. “As the mother of a young daughter, this project holds a special place in my heart. I know firsthand the magic that happens when children are given the freedom to explore, climb, imagine, and play.”

The site is between Crystal Bridges and the Amazeum, which lent expertise to the project. A temporary overlook has been added to give visitors a way to survey progress as it takes shape.

The Kroenke Family Foundation provided funding for the project, along with the McMillon family, Alice L. Walton Foundation, and Walton Family Foundation. The Walton and Kroenke families are related through marriage.
