Downtown Bentonville Church Seeks Help Building Affordable Housing

First United Methodist Church of Bentonville is looking for partners to help it build affordable housing on its downtown Bentonville campus.

Michelle J. Morris, lead pastor at First United Methodist, has firsthand experience with the difficulties of the Bentonville housing market.

She joined the church staff a few years ago. First, she rented a house but got booted because the owner sold it for a “ton of money.” At another rental, the rent kept increasing.

Now, she lives full-time in an RV on land owned by a church member, despite making a “good salary” from the church.

How Are Bentonville Schools Performing?

Bentonville Schools received high marks on its most recent state report card, with 20 schools earning A’s and four receiving B’s for the 2024-2025 school year.

These rankings indicate higher academic performance than much of the rest of the state. However, it’s difficult to compare this year’s results to past rankings because of changes in how the state evaluates schools.

Local Facebook Page Often Shares Inaccurate Information

A popular local Facebook page with thousands of followers has repeatedly shared inaccurate or fabricated community updates, including information about projects that never happened and events that do not appear to have occurred.

Update: Class Rank Eliminated

After hearing from 63 people at two public forums, Bentonville Schools moved forward with eliminating class rankings for high school students. The Board of Education voted on October 21 to discontinue the practice.

Class rank will no longer appear on academic transcripts, and high schools will no longer name a valedictorian or salutatorian. Students who were in the top ten at each high school at the time of the change will receive a commemorative letter. If a student applies for a scholarship or award that requires class rank, the district can send that information directly to the awarding organization.
